Chapter 10

Perched on the side of the pool waiting for Marta, Paul slapped his feet against the edge, a sure sign he was anxious. After listening to her speech yesterday, he couldn’t hide his feelings for her any longer, least of all from himself. Marta was simply the bravest, most beautiful woman he’d ever met, and he also saw the more tender side of her that she tried so hard to hide.

He’d spent a long time in prayer the previous evening asking God to reveal His heart and to show him if Marta was truly ‘the one’. He certainly felt she was, and during the peace that had come over him in prayer, he’d been certain God’s answer was ‘yes’.

Only afterwards, after becoming absorbed in the hustle and bustle of life, did the doubts start to creep in, although deep down he knew they were more about his own fears rather than anything else. The same fears that had kept him so resolutely single the past few years. He knew all too well the bitter sting of loss, and although he’d never grown bitter or questioned his faith, he realised now he’d allowed himself to develop an avoidance to love. Now that it was staring him in the face, he didn’t quite know what to do.

When he was with Marta, it all seemed so simple. It had felt so natural to have her at his family’s house on the weekend and he’d loved watching her interact with them and felt a warm rush of pleasure at seeing her getting on so well with Melody. As if she were part of the family. And yesterday, listening to her speech and seeing the way the schoolgirls had hung on her every word, hearing the passion in her voice, he’d had no doubts. If he let her slip through his fingers, he would regret it forever. It had seemed the most natural thing to ask her to meet him for a swim. Now he glanced at the clock and wondered if she was even coming.

“Paul!”

He needn’t have worried. He looked up to see her coming into the pool area, a smile on her pretty face, and rose to greet her.

“Sorry I’m a bit late. I was just making sure Angel was settled in her swimming class.”

In her simple one-piece swimsuit, with her hair pulled up in a bun and curly dark tendrils falling softly around her face, she looked gorgeous. He averted his gaze from her slim figure as she approached. He wasn’t the sort of guy to stare at a woman, even one as beautiful as Marta. Especially Marta. “Don’t worry. I’ve only just arrived myself.” He dismissed her apology with a wave of his hand.

They slipped into the pool, each in a different lane and began to swim. As he’d noticed before, she was an excellent swimmer, only just behind him, and he waited at each end for her as they did a few laps. “You’re an impressive swimmer,” he said.

“Thanks.” She grinned.
